We Can Always Talk Another Time

12x16” Acrylic and pencil crayon on cotton paper, framed

About this piece:

“Julie was, and always will be, my oldest sister. She supported me in too many ways to recount. She was beside me at my first art show, and was joyfully present at almost every one that followed in the two decades since then. She and I co-created Papercastle Art Collective, which was around for about 10 years, out of a desire to bridge our passions for art, photography and social justice. She was a shining beacon of enthusiasm, generosity and love, and I feel her absence every day.

This piece “We Can Always Talk Another Time” was painted shortly after she passed away. I was thinking about how we talked often, recounting the past few days on the phone. But if one of us was busy running a kid somewhere or heading to an event, we would make plans to talk later. At this point, that is no longer a reality for us. I am left thinking about how easy it is to take close relationships for granted.

Julie believed, and demonstrated that her relationships meant everything to her. I painted this piece considering her values of building friendship and connection, and as a reminder to keep family and friends an important priority in this world of tight deadlines and career goals.

I think one of the best ways to honour her is to not put off picking up the phone, or writing a card, or scheduling a coffee date with anyone from a close family member to a new acquaintance. Julie didn’t think twice about that.”

April: Angela Tycholaz

Custom watercolour painting of your home, similar to the works shown here

10x14” watercolour and ink original TBD, framed

About this piece:

In the days before Julie’s passing, Angela gifted Julie a watercolor painting of their family home. For this month’s auction, Angela is offering the winner a custom piece of their own home.

When asked about her inspiration, Angela says,

“Seeing how special this was for Julie was my inspiration to auction a custom home portrait.

Julie created a beautiful home full of love and memories for her family and that’s what her house meant to her. It was an open gathering space for community, a full library for connection and learning, and a sacred space for healing.

I want to capture through art what my clients home means to them while also supporting Julie’s cause and memory of her.”

You can watch a video of Julie opening the portrait of her home here, fair warning - you may want to have tissue nearby.

November: Jared Robinson

November Art Auction

THIS AUCTION IS CLOSED, please see current month for bidding opportunities.

Thank you to the winner, with a bid of $350 going to support Wellspring Cancer Support Edmonton!

Shining For You

13 x 19” 98,236 pencil strokes on textured art board, framed

About this piece:

“When I moved to Edmonton, I was young and chalk full of creativity. However, I was clueless as to how to nurture this super power.

Enter Julie. And Marcie. This tour de force sisterhood took me under their wings and invited me to fly with them. These formative years were spent encouraging one another creatively in thought, heart, and art. We would frequently gather in Julie’s basement and get creative - Marcie and I painting and Julie editing photos. We joined art shows and made our own. We cheered each other on as we began to grow our own flocks, all while learning to love this world.

Julie’s star always shone bright. It lit up all who were around. It beamed dignity and worth. And hope. A few months ago I remember Julie telling me that she loved birds. So when I was asked to create something for this auction, I double checked with David and found out the sparrow was one of her faves. So in this piece, Julie’s sparrow continues to shine hope. And I bet if you sit still and shut your eyes you can see and feel Julie’s brightness shining warmth into your heart.”

October: Giselle Denis

October Art Auction

giselle art 2.jpg

THIS AUCTION IS CLOSED, please see current month for bidding opportunities.

Thank you to the winner, with a bid of $1500 going to support the Nepal Children’s Foundation!

This painting is called “Dance with the flowers”.

She measures 48” x 36”.

About this piece:

Giselle Denis met Julie in college and quickly connected. They ended up being pregnant at the same time, which means they had the joy of playdates and raising their son’s together. Julie was one of Giselle’s best friends. When asked why she selected this piece to represent her dear friend in this auction, she replied,

The reason I chose this piece is because shortly after Julie passed away, my mom sent me this message:

“I wanted to tell you I had such an amazing picture of Julie that kept coming to me today. Hard to describe but she looked much like she did when I first met her at the College with her beautiful long hair. She was absolutely glowing, her lovely face was a picture of pure joy. She was wearing a white gown that was covered with sparkling diamonds that shimmered reflecting the light that surrounded her & she was dancing & twirling with joy in the midst of her homecoming celebration...”

I had a dream that night of Julie dancing in a fields of flowers. Free from pain & very much alive! As I was walking around the studio deciding which piece to donate, I was reading all of the titles of the paintings. As soon as I came across this one I said, “Yes that one! That is the one!”
