We Can Always Talk Another Time

12x16” Acrylic and pencil crayon on cotton paper, framed

About this piece:

“Julie was, and always will be, my oldest sister. She supported me in too many ways to recount. She was beside me at my first art show, and was joyfully present at almost every one that followed in the two decades since then. She and I co-created Papercastle Art Collective, which was around for about 10 years, out of a desire to bridge our passions for art, photography and social justice. She was a shining beacon of enthusiasm, generosity and love, and I feel her absence every day.

This piece “We Can Always Talk Another Time” was painted shortly after she passed away. I was thinking about how we talked often, recounting the past few days on the phone. But if one of us was busy running a kid somewhere or heading to an event, we would make plans to talk later. At this point, that is no longer a reality for us. I am left thinking about how easy it is to take close relationships for granted.

Julie believed, and demonstrated that her relationships meant everything to her. I painted this piece considering her values of building friendship and connection, and as a reminder to keep family and friends an important priority in this world of tight deadlines and career goals.

I think one of the best ways to honour her is to not put off picking up the phone, or writing a card, or scheduling a coffee date with anyone from a close family member to a new acquaintance. Julie didn’t think twice about that.”
